The information contained
in this descendant list is a summary from the book Our Vickery
Family History self-published by Michael E. Cafferky.
The genealogical “brick
wall” as represented by this compilation is in 1788 in Addison County, VT or
Charlestown, SC in about 1776. To date
the author has found no information that provides additional ancestral
connections prior to these dates and locations.
No connection has been confirmed between this VICKERY family and the
other VICKERY families of either New England or the Southern United
States. However, it is possible that
John VICKERY is the British Loyalist living in Charles Town, South Carolina at
the time of the Revolutionary War.
The VICKERY family
described here migrated from Addison County and Chittenden County in Vermont to Niagara County, Genesee County and Wayne County in New
York and thence to Clinton County, Tama County and Marshall County in Iowa. One of the related
VICKERY families migrated to San Bernardino County, California and thence to Orange County and Los Angeles County. Other
VICKERY families migrated to Nueces County, Texas and Cook County, Illinois.
The author welcomes
additional information related to this list.
DESCENDANTS OF JOHN VICKERY
1.John Vickery [1] We do not know the birth date of this John Vickery but he was probably born between 1730 – 1740. His wife’s name in 1801 may have been Lucretia Pratt. Whether Lucretia was married before or after her marriage to John Vickery is unknown but her surname Pratt in 1801 suggests a second marriage for her. Of the four children listed below only two (Gilbert and Jonathan) have been verified in historical records as being the sons of Lucretia Pratt. John’s origin is a mystery. One possibility is that he migrated from Massachusetts though no connection can be found between him and the Vickery family that lived there. Another possibility is that he migrated from Upstate New York about the time when Scottish immigrants from New York came into Vermont claiming the territory as their own. A third possibility is that Vickery emigrated from Canada. This may be the John Vickery who was a British Loyalist living in Charles Town, South Carolina at the time of the Revolutionary War. John Vickery was imprisoned in Charles Town for his refusal to join the Rebellious Militia. After spending 31 days in jail, John Vickery escaped to Canada where he later petitioned His Majesty’s Treasury to obtain financial assistance. He may have lived for a time in Sorel, Quebec. Earlier researchers have asserted that John Vickery married Jane Hoogeboom. However, Jane Hoogeboom is actually Sybil Bradley’s (see below under Jonathan Vickery) mother.
Children of John Vickery [1] and Lucretia are:
+2i. Sarah Vickery [2] was born 12 Mar 1764 Birthplace unknown. Married David Castle on 20 March 1784. She died 3 April 1845 in Westford, VT and is buried in Westford, VT next to her husband. We have not confirmed her relationship to the family.
+3ii Jonathan Vickery [2] was born in 1765. His birthplace is unknown. Died 8 Dec 1813 in Westford (Chittenden County), VT of spotted fever. His burial place is unknown.
+4iii. Gilbert Vickery [2] was born in 1772. His birthplace is unknown. Gilbert entered into real estate transactions with Jonathan Vickery as part owner. He died in Bridport (Addison County), VT 18 Feb 1814. He is buried in the Bridport Central Cemetery in the village square.
5iv. Abner Vickery [2]. His birth date and birth place are unknown. He was probably married about 1792. Entered into real estate transactions with Jonathan Vickery as a part owner. Abner’s death date and place of burial is unknown. We have not confirmed his relationship with the family.
2.Sarah Vickery [2] possible daughter of John Vickery and Lucretia was born 12 March 1764. She married David Castle of Woodbury, CT. They were married 20 March 1784 possibly in Frederickburg, NY. Sarah may have been born in Frederickburg, NY. She died 3 April 1845 in Westford (Chittenden County), VT and is buried in the Brookside Cemetery in Westford, VT next to her husband. Sarah and David had ten children in birth order as follows: David, Hiram, Phebe, Herman, Seymore, Stephen, Levi, John, Lucretia and Truman. Sarah’s relationship with John Vickery [1] and Lucretia has not been confirmed. David Castle died 23 December 1845.
3.Jonathan Vickery [2] son of John Vickery and Lucretia was born in 1765. His birthplace is unknown. He married Sybil (Sibel) Bradley before 1792, 2nd daughter of Capt. Miles Bradley of New Haven (Addison County), VT. Location and date of their marriage is unknown though it is likely that they married in Addison County since that was the residence of Sybil Bradley at that time. Sybil was born in 1771 in Connecticut to Captain Miles Bradley (b. 7 Feb 1747; d. 31 Mar 1819) and Jannetje Hoogeboom (b. 1745; d. 11 Nov 1821). Sybil died in 13 December 1813 of Spotted Fever. Jonathan Vickery owned land in Addison County between 1788 and 1800. In some real estate transactions he was a partner with Gilbert Vickery and others with Abner Vickery. Jonathan Vickery and Sybil Bradley and their children moved to Westford (Chittenden County), VT in about 1801 or 1802. There he managed a 100-acre farm until his death from spotted fever 8 Dec 1813. His burial place is unknown.

6i.Erastus Vickery [3] was born in 1792. His birthplace has not been confirmed but it was probably Addison County near New Haven, VT since at that time his father owned land there. The New Haven town record has no information on his birth. Thus, it is possible that Erastus was born in another state or in Canada. Erastus died of spotted fever 27 Nov 1813 in Westford (Chittenden County), VT. The place of his burial is unknown. He probably was not married.
7ii.Jane Vickery [3] was born in 1792. Her birthplace has not been confirmed but it was probably in Addison County near New Haven, VT. Later in her life Jane married Samuel A. (b. about 1837; d. 3 July 1862 in Savage Station, VA in a military hospital); Mary J. (b. about 1840); Hannah Eva (b. about 1849, d. 14 November 1909, married Villeroy Howard).

14ix.Jeremiah Vickery [3]. We do not know Jeremiah Vickery’s birth, marriage or death date. He was living in Westford (Chittenden County), VT in 1820 but by 1830 was in the NY State census. We have not confirmed his birth relationship with Jonathan Vickery and Sybil Bradley.
