The following is a transcription of a diary written by John L. Foster. He was a coronet player in the 14th Regiment New York State Volunteers band during the civil war**. It is thought that he was between 14 and 19 years old at the time. J. L. Foster was my Great Grandfathers best friend and when he died, having no heirs, he left this diary to him. The actual diary is in the possession of my aunt but she made copies for my family and me and I am transcribing from one of these.
