WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH HAMMETT
By Dan and Nancy Gannon

** HAMMETT's were found on P.52 of the 1900 Batavia City Directory

I gleaned the following information from the 1910 Federal Census for Genesee County,New York; Village of Batavia in the Township of Batavia:

William and Elizabeth Hammett are 56 years old in 1900. They were both born in 1843 or 1844 in Devonshire, England. They were living at 309 West Main Street in Batavia, not 209,as listed in the directory.They had been together for 36 years in 1900, having been married in 1864 in England at the ages of 20 and 21. They had been married for 25 years before they emigrated to the US in 1889 when they were both 45 or 46 years old. Elizabeth had given birth to 6 children in England and they were all living in 1900 as well as in 1910.

Two of their children appear with them in the 1900 Directory;
William Jr., and my grandfather, Richard Hammett, who was born in Devonshire, England in 1870,6 years after the marriage of William and Elizabeth.

Richard Hammett is 30 years old in 1900,and not yet married. By 1910, he is married to Mary Wake Reacher Hammett who emigrated to the United States in 1905 from Wetherby, West Riding Yorkshire, England and they are living at 10 Cherry Street, Batavia. At the time of the Census in April of 1910, Mary is 6 month's pregnant with my mother, Gwendolyn Leonie Hammett, b.July 21, 1910.

William Hammett was a janitor in the Public Schools of Batavia in 1910. The Board of Education Building was on West Main Street for many years and my great grandfather was custodian there. His house, which he owned free and clear in 1910 was near the Board of Education Building which was also used as a school building. William Hammett was a naturalized citizen,the date of his naturalization appearing in the 1920 Census, which I'll be getting to shortly as I will be in Batavia.

I will also be looking at the 1881 UK Census for William and Elizabeth and their children. By 1881, William and Elizabeth had been married for 17 years and had not left for the States, so they should be in the Devonshire Census.

Well,that's my little story so far.
